Are You Approachable???

When you walk down the halls of your school or the sidewalks of the streets in your city, how approachable are you? Do you think people feel like they can start a conversation with you, or simply just say hi? One thing that can change your approachability is simply a SMILE!! Yes, it’s that easy!

Ask yourself these three questions to see how approachable you are…

1. When you walk past others do you…
a. Look down at the ground and keep to yourself
b. Focus on where you are going, looking straight ahead of you
c. Hold your head high and make eye contact with those you pass
2. How many times a day do you tend to smile and laugh?
(If you are not sure, count today!)
a. Less than 10 times
b. 11 to 30 times
c. More than 31 times
3. When you are talking with others you first meet do you…
a. Give one-word answers and go on your way
b. Talk mostly about yourself and what’s going on with you
c. Ask questions to the other person and show interest in them
Answers:

Mostly A’s… You are probably not as approachable as Christ would want you to be. It’s okay to be shy, but how can you expect to share the love of God if you are not approachable to others? Step out of your comfort zone and smile at everyone you see this week and see how it makes you feel!

Mostly B’s… Good job on being semi-approachable! Some people feel they can talk with you but not everyone, so let’s make it everyone!! Keep track of how many times you smile today and try to beat your record tomorrow and then the next day and so on!

Mostly C’s… WOW!!! Way to be approachable!! Keep up the awesome work! There is always room to grow. So, now that you know you are approachable, what are you doing with your approachability? Take another step and share with others about your Savior, Jesus Christ! Share about His love and how it is for everyone!

The facts about smiling…
• A smile is a universal expression of happiness and recognized as such by all cultures.
• Smiling or even seeing someone smile releases endorphins that work
in the brain to give an overall feeling of well-being.
• Women smile more than men
• It takes only 17 muscles to smile but 43 muscles to frown.
• Happy people generally don’t get sick as often as people who are unhappy.

Matthew 10:32-33 (NCV), “All those who stand before others and say they believe in me, I will say before my Father in heaven that they belong to me. But all who stand before others and say they do not believe in me, I will say before my Father in heaven that they do not belong to me.”

Sparkle is the girl’s ministry of Shine Ministries, at Word of Life Christian Center, led by Teri Bagwell. Our mission is to provide leadership, knowledge, guidance, and growth to young ladies, ages 13-18, by teaching the Word of God and training teenage girls to apply Godly principles in their everyday lives. We aim to provide a positive, encouraging atmosphere for young ladies to grow spiritually and build healthy God-centered relationships. Our goal is to empower young ladies to recognize proper boundaries and expectations on how true women of God live their lives.

Teri Bagwell is the Director of the teenage girls ministry Sparkle at Word of Life and also heads up the Pulse youth ministry with her husband, Pastor Aaron Bagwell. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Colorado, and in her free time, Teri enjoys studying fashion, as well as creating and designing clothes.
