“As for Me and My House We Will Serve the Lord”
(Joshua 24:15)
The feeling of being “at home” is so essential in our busy lives today. Don’t you enjoy going home after a long hard day? Our homes should be a refuge from the world and a shelter of love and peace for our families. Home is where we and our family members sleep, eat, cry, play, work, study, get mad, dance, sing, create, relax, love and pray. We should be inspired to make this place a comfortable, clean, welcoming place! As women, I truly believe that God put inside of us the “nesting instinct” (Prov.31). As we create a “homey atmosphere” for our families to be nurtured and loved, I know the Lord will bless our efforts. He will help us to create a peaceful place for our family members to come home to.
Whether you have a small apartment, a room in someone else’s house, a condominium or a big beautiful house you should make it an inviting lovely place to dwell in! It may not be everything you’re dreaming of, but don’t let your “wistful someday dream” keep you from making your surroundings into a cozy and blessed dwelling! Most women have an innate ability to make “something out of nothing.” When you understand that the creator of the universe lives in your heart, you come alive with the realization that you have great creativity inside of you! All you have to do is pray and ask the Lord to release it! He will bless the work of your hands as you create an inviting and warm home for your family and even for yourself, if you live alone.
My oldest son, Adam, is a senior Pastor in Illinois. He and his beautiful wife, Sarah, took a whole month to bless peoples’ homes. They have personally visited over 100 houses! I am in awe of their love for the Lord and the people in their church to do this. Blessing your home is very important. If you are unable to have a minister come to your home, then invite some friends over and pray and bless your home. I have never lived in a house that we didn’t have a “House Warming.” All you need are: some light refreshments, a few good friends, and bible verses of blessing, pretty candles, soft music and a big circle of prayer in the heart of your house! Many times this takes place in the kitchen or family room. What a wonderful way to celebrate a new house, but it’s never too late to bless the home you live in. Make the time to enjoy and give thanks to the Lord for His many blessings to you!
A famous Jewish Blessing says this,
“We ask His blessing on this home
and all who live in it.
May its doors be open to those in need,
And its rooms be filled with kindness.
May love dwell within its walls,
And joy shine from its windows.
May His peace protect it and
His presence never leave it.
Here are some little ideas to spark your creativity to make your house a home:
~scented candles....anywhere
and everywhere!
~baskets everywhere to hold and hide the mail, magazines, art projects, kitchen utensils, bath items
~soft pillows that are pretty and USABLE on the sofa
~a cozy throw on your sofa, on a chair near the fireplace, on the
edge of an ottoman, or on a
corner of your bed
~wall hangings with
scriptures on them
~fresh flowers on the table and on your nightstand (sweet dreams...)
~mist cotton balls with perfume and tuck them in drawers, in your closet, under your pillow
~photos of loved ones lined on
a shelf or clustered on a small
end table
~soft rugs everywhere to wiggle
your toes in
~beds turned down at night for loved ones ( add a little love note or a verse from Psalms on their pillow)
~Bread baking in the oven, soup bubbling on the stove and hot coffee or tea brewing....smells sooo good!
~a little bottle of anointing oil to use when you’re praying over your home
May this season spark creativity in your life to make your “house a home” that causes your loves ones to come through the door gladly saying, “We’re home!”
