“Walking in His Shadow at the Workplace”
By Vicki Crosby-Attipoe

Most of us associate good weather with vacations and fun family gatherings. The thought of spending all day in the office while it is sunny and beautiful outside can be a little heartbreaking!

As I have had the opportunity to travel for my job, I’ve noticed that it seems more difficult to leave home in the summer months. I dread missing great barbecues with family during week nights when the daylight savings prolongs the evenings and the neighborhood interactions and social activities are at their peak. So how can we continue to concentrate on our tasks at the workplace during the warm summer days?

If given the chance, daily distractions can cause us to miss great opportunities and blessings. This is why we should submit every thought to the Lord and remember that there is a time for everything and a season for every activity, as the Word declares in Ecclesiastes 3:1. With a seed of belief and an insight into God’s will and plan, great accomplishments are possible.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Psalms 91:1, which teaches us to abide under the shadow of the Most High God. There is protection and covering when we dwell in the secret place of God. To abide under a shadow literally means that we move constantly in the direction of the shade. God leads the way, and we follow in His footsteps. Our trust and belief that our ways are ordered by Him will usher us into bigger territories and enlarge us toward greatness.

We each have a choice in life, and choosing a career outside of the home comes at a price – but often with compensation. Therefore, we must prove ourselves worthy of our employment. Engaging ourselves daily and becoming excited with new challenges presented to us, as well as learning to trust and follow in God’s footsteps, makes the journey much more rewarding! Here are a few tips for you:

•Keep a positive mindset, and develop an attitude of service. Promotions are often given to those that go beyond the call of duty and responsibility.
•Engage in continuous, ongoing learning to broaden your knowledge and skill set or other areas of interest. Offering to fill in for other employees is one way of learning and expanding and gives you more advantage for retention.
•Accept mistakes, and learn from them.
•Build a solid support network of mentors to help you grow, and acknowledge their contributions to your success.
• Stand firm, speak up, and portray confidence in your field of expertise.
• Communicate effectively and concisely. Great communicators listen to what others have to say.
•Plan adequate vacations, and set time aside to enjoy family and friends.

No matter what we do, our success in the workplace depends primarily on cultivating an attitude of service, as well as providing value to others. This summer, allow the Lord to guide your path as you renew yourself and demonstrate stewardship. After all, you are blessed with your job. Praise God, and follow Him!
